NISSAN ANNUCIA PROGRAMMI SPORTIVI PER IL 2012

A lengthy video conference this morning from Japan confirmed much of what we already know with regard to Nissan’s 2012 Motorsport plans and clarified entries and driver squads in a host of GT series.

The conference was introduced by Siman Sproule – Corporate VP who described Nissan’s 6 year business plan seeing their motorsport involvement “Continuing to evolve and grow.” Good news indeed!
Shoichi Miyanti President of NISMO then reviewed the successes of 2011 including the FIA GT1 Drivers World championship for the Nissan GTR, the ILMC, Le Mans and LMS LMP2 titles for Nissan engined customer teams (Signatech and Greaves Motorsport) and the Super GT drivers and Manufacturers titles for plus Mola Motorsport and their GT500 Nissan GT-R
Mr Miyanti confirmed later in the presentation that: “For the time being there are no plans for LMP1 factory involvement” and there was no mention whatsoever of the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship.
The message was very much more upbeat though about LMP2 with interviews featuring Martin and Alex Brundle, plus Lucas Ordonez, heralding a year which will see 11 of the 18 Le Mans 24 Hours LMP2 entries featuring Nissan V8 power!

Greaves Motorsport will benefit form NISMO technical assistance for their ELMS and Le Mans programmes in 2012 whilst Signatech get the same backing in the FIA WEC, 2009 GT Academy winner Jordan Tresson is set to be joined by Franck Mailleux and “011 Greaves Motorsport driver Olivier Lombard in the #23 Oreca car.
Martin Brundle on Le Mans: “I’ve led, set pole and won the race – To strap your son in and send him off down the Mulsanne is an inspiring thing. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Lucas Ordonez: “Playstation players could never imagine being a professional driver – GT Academy proves its possible. I’m aiming to win Le Mans in 2012!”
The sole GT race programme announced for Europe was a single car entry in the Blancpain Endurances Series for GT Academy Team RJN where 2011 Academy winner Jann Mardenborough will join RJN regular Alex Buncombe and new signing Chris Ward for the full season in a new Nissan GT-R GT3.
There was confirmation too that the GT Academy concept will expand to a stand alone contest in Germany for 2012.
In North America the sportscar/ GT efforts are focussed on support for customer teams in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge where B.J. Zacharias and 2011 GT Academy USA winner Bryan Heitkotter will race in the GS Class in this series with a Nissan 370Z.
Lara Tallman and Vesko Kozarov, again both from the U.S.A., will take part in the ST Class with a Nissan Altima Coupe.
The Pirelli World Challenge meanwhile will see Mike Skeen participate in the GT class in a Nissan GT-R. Rick Bushey, Greg Shaffer and Brian Kleeman will race in the GTS class with Nissan 370Zs

Kinihiko Kakimoto DG of Nissan Teams
“Two years ago we disappointed GT-R fans, we couldn’t deliver the results. We looked hard at what we were doing and came back with 4 cars last year. Our plans worked and we took five wins from eight races.
“The #46 car only won one race but always finished well, that secured the title for the team whilst the #23 won three races but had some problems and finished second in the title race. The #12 car too was in title contention right to the end.
“We kept our promise to our fans and now we’re aiming to defend our championships.
“We are not complacent though, there are big efforts underway to do better again as our rivals develop vehicles to depose the GTR

Yutaka Suzuki, the NISMO Team Principal and NISMO’s Chief Vehicle Engineer explained some of the changes to the Super GT cars for 2012:
“For the engine we get a 1.2mm larger air restrictor – That should give us an additional 40 horsepower from last year.
